Position Title: Tissue Culture Lab Supervisor

Location: Mills River, NC

Type: Full time

Start Date: 10/15/24

Below is the pay range for this position that we reasonably expect to pay. Individual compensation is based on various factors including experience, education, skillset, and other relevant qualifications. This range is for the North Carolina location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $70,000 - $100,000

The Opportunity:

Ohalo Genetics is seeking a highly motivated Tissue Culture Lab Supervisor to help us optimize and expand our small plant tissue culture lab. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, enthusiastic about hands-on work, and responsible. Prior experience as a plant breeding and production tissue culture laboratory supervisor is necessary. The tissue culture lab supervisor will work closely with our lab manager in CA to align all processes across labs, greenhouse staff, and scientists to ensure the laboratory's overall success.

Responsibilities:

  • The supervisor is responsible for ensuring that daily operations run smoothly. This includes managing work schedules, delegating tasks, and addressing any issues.
  • Oversee all aspects of the tissue culture laboratory, including maintaining plant inventory, managing lab materials and equipment, and ensuring efficient workflows.
  • Production planning and Forecasting: Use historical data to forecast demand accurately and plan production schedules accordingly.
  • Resource Scheduling: Ensure equipment and personnel are scheduled effectively to avoid bottlenecks and idle time.
  • Set up production metrics that align with the broader organizational goals. This might include targets related to output, quality, and efficiency.
    • Metrics should be specific and clearly defined. These include numerical measures such as units produced, defect rates, and average cycle time.
  • Perform routine tissue culture laboratory tasks, including, but not limited to, micropropagation, meristem isolation, callus subculture, plant sampling, media preparation, Flow cytometry, inventory, and the autoclave process.
  • Lead and mentor a team of lab technicians, providing guidance, training, and support to keep their team motivated and help employees meet their goals and perform their duties effectively.
  • Create and manage team schedules, ensuring adequate coverage and optimal productivity.
  • Train new hires on tissue culture techniques and laboratory procedures.
  • Evaluate team performance regularly and provide constructive feedback to enhance individual and collective effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with project leads from different departments, attending meetings to provide expertise on tissue culture techniques and contribute to project objectives.
  • Promote open communication, collaboration, and mutual respect among team members to foster a healthy and motivated work environment,
  • Ensure the safekeeping of proprietary varieties and confidential information.
  • Follow company policies and practices, representing the organization ethically and professionally in all interactions.
  • Balancing Multiple Priorities, being able to juggle various responsibilities and must manage their time effectively to meet all demands.

Candidate Profile:

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in production plant tissue culture.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to organize workflows effectively to meet specifications and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace.
  • Detail-oriented and well-organized approach to record-keeping.
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to take initiative in routine tasks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic, goal-oriented, and tenacious, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment across multiple departments.
  • Self-confidence, professional demeanor, and an optimistic attitude, capable of remaining calm under pressure and utilizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Punctuality and time management skills, capable of prioritizing tasks to achieve team and company goals while adhering to safety protocols and company policies.
  • Sit for extended periods and perform repetitive work.
  • Adjust working hours as needed, including weekends, to meet operational requirements.
  • Ability to travel to Aptos lab for one or two weeks for training.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds intermittently
